FHI 360’s presence in Burundi dates to the early 2000s when we worked with national and local partners to prevent and mitigate the impact of HIV and AIDS. Today, FHI 360 continues to address HIV and other development challenges through the Roads to a Healthy Future (ROADS II) project, which serves approximately 30 percent of Burundi’s population. ROADS II in Burundi strengthens the capacity of provincial and district health offices, hospitals, health centers and community-based organizations to increase access to HIV and other health services, including family planning services, for mobile populations and local residents. ROADS II in Burundi also addresses gender-based violence, which often fuels the spread of HIV by limiting the ability to negotiate safe sexual practices, disclose HIV status and access services. FHI 360 has also addressed the barriers that prevent access to education for girls and boys. Our Ambassadors’ Girls’ Scholarship Program increased educational opportunities in Burundi by awarding 1,312 scholarships to students in 56 schools. Look around. All the way around. Our History Soap-making in the Kuntze family is an old tradition. Already in 1814 during the Holy Roman Empire, the Kuntzes started with the art of soap-making. In the 1960s Mr. Dieter Kuntze travelled to Egypt, Uganda and finally settled in Burundi where he established “Savon d’or” in 1970. After his retirement in 1996, his son, the current Chairman Mr Matthias Kuntze took over. Our Present Since then, even with the multiple challenges Burundi has known, Savonor has kept a steady growth and is now a fully integrated company; from palm oil plantations, palm oil refining to soap and edible oil production and distribution. Savonor is by now the largest soap and edible oil producer in Burundi, one of the largest private companies in Burundi with 1500 dedicated employees, and a strong presence in Rwanda, Eastern Congo and Western Tanzania. Rice has become an important crop for Burundi, which increased its rice production by 316% between 1984 and 2011. In 2010 Burundi was importing about one-third of its rice and making efforts to further increase production. IRRI has been officially collaborating with Burundi since 2008. IRRI’s objective in Burundi is to enhance the national capability in research on rice and rice-based systems in the country. IRRI first started working in Burundi in 2008 when a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the country and IRRI was signed. The beginnings of this agreement were first born when current IRRI Liaison Scientist and Coordinator for Burundi, Joseph Bigirimana, attended the Rice Research to Production Training Course at IRRI in 2006 where he met with IRRI management. Following this preliminary meeting and further work by Joseph in Burundi, the Burundian government officially asked IRRI to collaborate with it. In 2006, IRRI sent experts to Burundi to investigate the rice production environment and saw there were opportunities for collaboration. The University of Burundi (French: Université du Burundi, or UB) is a public university located in Bujumbura, Burundi. Founded in 1964, it comprises eight faculties and five institutes and has a student enrollment of approximately 13,000. It is based in three campuses in Bujumbura and a fourth in Gitega. It took its current name in 1977 and is Burundi’s only publicly funded university. The origins of the University of Burundi can be traced to the Agronomy Institute of the University of the Belgian Congo and Ruanda-Urundi. In 1960 this became the Agronomical Institute of Ruanda-Urundi (Institut agronomique du Ruanda-Urundi) and moved to Bujumbura, becoming the country’s first major centre of higher education.[1] Under the initiative of the Jesuit missions, three other specialist institutions subsequently emerged in Bujumbura after Burundi’s independence in 1962.
