FHI 360’s presence in Burundi dates to the early 2000s when we worked with national and local partners to prevent and mitigate the impact of HIV and AIDS. Today, FHI 360 continues to address HIV and other development challenges through the Roads to a Healthy Future (ROADS II) project, which serves approximately 30 percent of Burundi’s population. ROADS II in Burundi strengthens the capacity of provincial and district health offices, hospitals, health centers and community-based organizations to increase access to HIV and other health services, including family planning services, for mobile populations and local residents. ROADS II in Burundi also addresses gender-based violence, which often fuels the spread of HIV by limiting the ability to negotiate safe sexual practices, disclose HIV status and access services. FHI 360 has also addressed the barriers that prevent access to education for girls and boys. Our Ambassadors’ Girls’ Scholarship Program increased educational opportunities in Burundi by awarding 1,312 scholarships to students in 56 schools. Look around. All the way around. From past to present. From here to the other side of the globe. The key aspects of our lives, our world, are inextricably linked. FHI 360 is a nonprofit human development organization dedicated to […]

Rice has become an important crop for Burundi, which increased its rice production by 316% between 1984 and 2011. In 2010 Burundi was importing about one-third of its rice and making efforts to further increase production. IRRI has been officially collaborating with Burundi since 2008. IRRI’s objective in Burundi is to enhance the national capability in research on rice and rice-based systems in the country. IRRI first started working in Burundi in 2008 when a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the country and IRRI was signed. The beginnings of this agreement were first born when current IRRI Liaison Scientist and Coordinator for Burundi, Joseph Bigirimana, attended the Rice Research to Production Training Course at IRRI in 2006 where he met with IRRI management. Following this preliminary meeting and further work by Joseph in Burundi, the Burundian government officially asked IRRI to collaborate with it. In 2006, IRRI sent experts to Burundi to investigate the rice production environment and saw there were opportunities for collaboration. IRRI has since established an office in the capital Bujumbura within the campus of the University of Burundi, where laboratory and other facilities are shared with the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences. IRRI now employs 19 staff in […]

In 1997, after a period of prayer and fasting, The Lord spoke to Chrissie Chapman and her team about starting a school in Bujumbura. Subsequently, in January 1998, a small school began in Kinindo to educate nine of the orphaned children who were in Chrissie’s care. These children were taught by an expatriate teacher from the U.K., whose living room served as the classroom. In June 1998 Chrissie noticed a new building in the local area. She approached the owner and asked if she could rent it and use it as a school. He […]

The University of Burundi (French: Université du Burundi, or UB) is a public university located in Bujumbura, Burundi. Founded in 1964, it comprises eight faculties and five institutes and has a student enrollment of approximately 13,000. It is based in three campuses in Bujumbura and a fourth in Gitega. It took its current name in 1977 and is Burundi’s only publicly funded university. The origins of the University of Burundi can be traced to the Agronomy Institute of the University of the Belgian Congo and Ruanda-Urundi. In 1960 this became the Agronomical Institute of Ruanda-Urundi (Institut agronomique du Ruanda-Urundi) and moved to Bujumbura, becoming the country’s first major centre of higher education.[1] Under the initiative of the Jesuit missions, three other specialist institutions subsequently emerged in Bujumbura after Burundi’s independence in 1962. These institutions were merged to form the Official University of Bujumbura (Université officielle de Bujumbura, or UOB) in January 1964.[1] In 1977, the UOB merged with two vocational institutions to create the University of Burundi (Université du Burundi, or UB).[1] Teaching at the university has been significantly disrupted by political upheaval elsewhere in Burundi since independence. The Burundian Civil War (1993-2006) created particular problems, as did the accompanying […]
