ABOUT INEMA ART CENTER

Founded in 2012 by brothers and self-taught painters Emmanuel Nkuranga and Innocent Nkurunziza, Inema Arts Center spurs creativity for personal, social, and economic growth.

Nkurunziza and Nkuranga started Inema to tap the untapped potential of art in Rwanda. To use creative expression to bring the community and country alive. To provide exposure to creative people and create opportunities for Rwanda’s most underserved to use creativity for a productive livelihood.

Today, Inema Arts Center has become a beacon in Rwanda for cultivating creative expression.

Who We Are

Inema Arts Center is a collective of Rwandan creative artists. At its core, Inema Arts Center provides space for 10 artists in residence to explore their creative talent. Specializing in contemporary African Arts, Crafts, Music, and Dance.

Inema’s artists produce paintings, sculptures, and mixed media expressions showcased in, the Gallery at Inema Arts Center. The Center is home to programmes, projects, and initiatives that expand creative arts in Rwanda.

Through workshops, trainings, and hands on classes, the Inema Arts Center provides a space to fuel creative expression.

Inema Art Center featured in New york times

The Inema Arts Center (250-783-187-646; inemaartcenter.com) opened in 2012 in a split-level house with a blocky, colorful design painted on it. In the back of the property, the 13 resident artists splatter paint and build installations, and members of a women’s cooperative make jewelry and accessories to sell in the gallery’s gift shop. Three times a week there are performances of the Rwandan traditional dance styles — amaraba for girls, intore for boys — in a courtyard overlooked by eyes painted on a high wall. The artist Emmanuel Nkuranga founded the Inema center with his brother Innocent Nkurunziza after they traveled to the United States for artist residencies and toured the Museum of Modern Art and the Guggenheim in New York. Mr. Nkuranga sees encouraging a vibrant art scene in Rwanda as his mission. Equally important, he believes, is “creating a movement in the city for those who don’t have an awareness of art.” Most of the proceeds go to the artists. “We don’t want stories about starving artists anymore!” he said.

THE INEMA GALLERY

The Inema Gallery is the heart of Inema Art Center. It hosts a permanent show for our ten artists in residence with new paintings hung every day. Visit the Inema Studio to see artists painting and producing live.

We also showcase artists from around the world. Recent shows include American, Belgian, and Moroccan painting and sculpture.

The Gallery is a dynamic space and frequently fills for poetry nights, workshops, or cultural evenings. We’re a home away from home for many organizations and always welcome new ideas for how to use our space. Feel free to contact us with your event.
