The Inception of Ngwenya Glass Started in 1979 by Swedish Aid. They built the factory, imported all the machinery and equipment and employed and trained Swazi’s in the age old art of glassblowing. Two of the most talented were sent over to Sweden to be trained by some of the leading glassblowers in the world. From 1981 to its closure in 1985, the factory was run entirely by Swazi’s. In June 1987, the factory was re-opened by Richard, Alix and Chas Prettejohn. Richard a farmer, Alix an ex-librarian and Chas a marine engineer. Further removed from glassblowing one could hardly imagine! You may ask “What prompted them to pack up everything in East London and to move to Swaziland/Eswatini to make glass animals?”! Well, the Prettejohn’s used to collect glass elephants from Swazi Glass Craft (Ngwenya Glass) until suddenly – NO MORE! After a couple of years they decided to pop up to Swaziland/Eswatini whilst in Northern Natal and to “investigate”! The outcome – Proud owners of the only glassblowing factory in Africa. But now what?! They know nothing about this business!! Through sheer determination, hard work and common sense – and of course, invaluable assistance from Consol Glass, Talana […]

Swazi Candles was started in an old cowshed of a former dairy in 1982 by 2 South African art graduates. In those days The Kingdom of Swaziland was a haven of peace amidst troubled countries and proved to be an excellent place for setting up a Cottage Craft industry. The mountainous countryside was beautiful, the Swazi people were warm and friendly and proved to be ideal partners for our industry. The little workshop soon gained a reputation for producing unique candles and started attracting visitors. The vibrancy of the workshop, uniqueness of the product and the skill of the artisans resulted in Swazi Candles becoming one of Swaziland’s premier tourist attractions. By the mid nineties the humble cowshed workshop had burgeoned into an industry that employed over 200 local people and exported candles all over the world. The past few years we have developed some new product ranges including 100% organic soya candles, wax glow lamps (which illuminate for ±100 hours on 2 AA batteries) and handmade balms and soaps. Our range of products have grown into an astonishing array of patterns, shapes and designs. Following current trends and seasonal colour ways, we are continuously updating our styles and welcome […]

The Antenna Gallery is an “institution” in Dakar. The high selectivity of the objects presented, combined with the expertise of its animators, make reference. Its situation is atypical: it evolves off the trail of approved experts, auctioneers and membership of a renowned collection. Claude Everlé favors a large periodicity of inter-African travel, to the acquisition of objects in auction rooms. Are not the criteria born of the object-acquiring communion and a refined taste of aesthetics? Credo validated by a success of four decades … The history of the Antenna Gallery merges with that of its founder Marthe EVERLE, who, in 1964, year of her arrival in Senegal, brings her stone to the edification of the country. In 1972, she left the Lycée “Van Vo” to borrow with Claude EVERLE, her husband, the path of primitive and contemporary African art. Thirty years ago, it was to be a pioneer in Senegal, a Muslim country, to translate the rituals of the animist ethnic groups of the countries of West and Central Africa. From her tireless research, Marthe creates a database where each object of art is listed, with its formal specificities, its function … thus revealing its secret. Work for all: intellectuals, […]

Within the Vilanculos and Macunhe area, over 50 independent artists currently work together sharing their talent, skills and inspiration to bring you a diverse range of exclusively Mozambican handcrafts, echoing the soul, rhythm and vibrancy of coastal Mozambique. Enter our website and learn more about these gifted artisans, their community, crafts and the story of Machilla Magic. Sandy and Snowy came to Mozambique in 1999, where they lived in Machune Bay alongside the local ‘pescadors’ (fishermen) and their families, sharing their knowledge of sustainability and permaculture. Dependent entirely upon fishing, the livelihood of the pescadors was threatened by increased netting and trawling activity in the area, which greatly concerned Sandy and Snowy. The couple put their thinking caps on and, inspired by the enthusiasm of the local people, began teaching new skills such as creative knot tying – a natural adaptation for the pescadors, beading and carving […]

Botswanacraft was established in 1970 by the Botswana Development Corporation to develop the rural based handicraft industry of the country. The company has grown to be Botswana’s largest retailer and exporter of handicrafts. Privately owned since 1993 the company now directly employs over forty citizens and indirectly creates work for numerous rural craft producers thoughout the country. Botswanacraft complements locally made products by importing handicrafts from the southern African region and other developing countries. We are dedicated towards improving the quality of life for rural Batswana and the management and utilisation of our natural resources. The most famous of all the craft products of Botswana is the basket. As an intergral part of the Botswana agricultural culture, baskets have been made and used traditionally for thousands of years. Closed baskets with lids are used for storing grain, seeds, and sometimes sorghum beer. Large, open bowl shaped baskets are used by the women for carrying items on their heads and for winnowing grain after it has been threshed. Smaller, plate shaped baskets are used for winnowing grain after it has been pounded. The main producers of baskets are the women of the Bayei and Hambukushu tribes in northwestern Botswana. Salem’s Design is more than a craft store; Salem’s provides a traditional cultural shopping experience with contemporary, creative designs. Every piece holds an Ethiopian story, weaving together the people who make the crafts with the tradition of cotton spinning, basket weaving or embroidery, the religious significance of each regional cross, the tribal importance of beaded jewelry or the pure cotton scarves. Salem’s Design is living history, telling the stories of Ethiopia as it courageously battled wars, bonded religions and empowered its people through artwork. Salem’s Design started as a couple necklaces sold to friends, but over the past three years Salem’s Design has become a destination for expatriates, tourists, and Ethiopians for high-end jewelry and gifts. With a new, beautiful website, new location, and space for weavers, jewelers and baskets weavers, Salem’s is poised for fast growth. If you want to find crafts from all around the country, Markaz is the place to go. Located on Road 199 in Degla, the charming shop considers itself to be a ‘crafts revival and development centre’. Carrying household items made from all areas of Egypt, the merchandise is as authentic and local as can get. The shop itself is somewhat discreet and could easily go unnoticed since there is no sign at the door and one could easily mistake it for being, well, anything other than a shop. The interior is soft and inviting, made up of two floors. On the bottom floor you will find a range of tribal-like carpets from South Sinai adorned with almost Aztec patterns, available in deep reds and browns, or more neutral colours. The prices go between about 250LE and 400LE according to size. Further into the shop there are floor-to-ceiling shelves with handmade bed covers and throws (around 250LE) and table clothes (around 175LE). ‘Akhmeem’ designs – which use a striped, satin-like fabric – originating from Sohag, are readily used on pillows, where a relatively large one goes for 120LE. Other styles of pillows can be found upstairs, with embroidered scenery made in […]

Everard Read is Africa’s oldest commercial art gallery. Established along a dusty street in the young mining town of Johannesburg the gallery celebrates its centenary year in 2013. Evolving within the continents economic powerhouse, Everard Read has since its inception been associated with pre-eminent artists working in Southern Africa. Throughout the 20th Century, a large proportion of South Africa’s most important paintings and sculpture graced the interior of the gallery in central Johannesburg. Everard Read has also been involved in sourcing Fine Art from acclaimed international artists and continues to do so. This, over decades, profoundly stimulated the tastes and sophistication of art collectors in a country somewhat isolated during apartheid. In the dynamic contemporary era in South Africa, Everard Read is at its core a gallery dedicated to exhibiting paintings and sculpture by South Africa’s finest modern and contemporary artists. The development of young artists’ careers is also a crucial component of the gallery’s mission. After our 50 years in the city centre, in the late 1970’s, a new gallery was built to house Everard Read on Jellicoe Avenue, Rosebank. This building has since become a celebrated icon of South African post-modern design. In 2009, the CIRCA building was […]
